I can't believe people don't use flannel boards more! I admit, I'm old school. teaching for 30 years now, but they are so great! My twenty-something assistants told me that in their ECE class, the teacher asked the class how many were using flannel boards in their classrooms and they were the only ones who said they were. No one uses them! I make lots and lots of them myself. They look homemade, but I'm good with that. My main problem is the lack of good flannel board stories for sale online. I have a few. 5 little frogs, The three bears, the 3 little kittens but most are just items, like shapes, or bodies and clothes or food. Very few real stories available. I've made felts for the count down rhymes, like 5 little ducks, turtles, elephants, fish. But also I have BINGO, I was walking down the road, The hungry caterpillar, Brown bear, Brown Bear, Harry the dirty dog, Abiyoyo, Caps for Sale, Goldilocks and more.

When I was a preschool teacher we used to do the first six weeks or beginning of the year study. We also did something Calle guided discovery when we taught children how to play appropriately with the toys and where to put them when they were done

I have been teaching for 20 years and dislike the behaviour chart system! Never helped the behavioural problem. Even for my own children never liked it. These charts are demeaning to the child!

Pre-K state requirements where I live mandate Alphabet, shapes, colors, numbers to be posted on walls, in addition to calendar, weather, visual schedule, not to mention 2 bulletin boards with administrative items used once in a while by teachers and checked by state (schedule-I know mine) class roster (month in, I am confident) We also are mandated to have birthday board, child's work bbd, monthly theme bulletin board, and 6 posters of people, food, plants, animals and landmarks also mandated by state. I also have a room theme (required). Nothing can be taken down. My classroom belongs neither to the children or me, but to the state and its mandates.

21:39 This is excellent advice. I struggle to remember to do this and appreciate this and the circle time discussion as prevention. Attention on compassion for the hurt child. I am really looking for ideas on activities to discuss and teach the child to self redirect.

So would this curriculum be appropriate for a jk/sk classroom (4 and 5 year olds) or is meant for preschool?

I love the idea of thinking about “guidance” instead of “redirection.”

Would you agree that sometimes the best thing to do is change what you’re doing and adapt if children aren’t able to regulate at circle time. By this I mean stop the story and sing a song or do a movement activity instead. 3 -5 year olds aren’t always meant to sit and ‘forcing’ them to is counter productive. Redirect your plan to fit the needs of the children.

In NC ratio for one-year olds is 1:6 and two-year olds is 1:9. It needs to be lower!

I have a nightmare scenario. The CEO/Principal/Boss of a new preschool in Japan has no preschool experience and wanted to create a school with very limited rules, mostly play, and encouraged loud voices thinking that's what's best for children. I was hired to be a home room English teacher (along one assistant) to 16 three year olds in 2022 then 22/23 three year olds in 2023 (I've never been a preschool teacher before and I wanted to breakdown daily) for 8 hours every weekday and I was not adequately trained or supported the whole time. I just felt that I would just have to suffer through it thinking this is the way preschool is supposed to be. But after watching your channel, I am gaining so many skills to help the class run more efficiently and to be a better teacher and caregiver. Luckily my class this year only has 14 kids. The principal was recently ousted and they hired an equally inexperienced new guy to replace him, but now I feel I can steer the school in a new direction by asserting myself as I practice what I learn on this channel. Thank you so much for sharing your experience and knowledge in your videos. Newbies like me are so grateful for your ideas and insights!

I have a question, if a child is having trouble keeping their hands to themselves, do you put them separetly at a table where they can still see everything and participate or not?

My school in Japan made me teach writing letters with tracing within 3 weeks after starting the school year for my 3 year olds. It was tough. I had 22 kids and I was overwhelmed, the kids were frustrated with it, and I just couldn't understand why they would need to start so soon! I'm glad you said 3 year olds need exposure only!
